Most Populous County In Arizona Declares Itself A Gun Sanctuary

The Maricopa County Board of Supervisors is reaffirming their commitment to the Second Amendment by declaring the most populous county in Arizona a "Second Amendment Preservation County." Maricopa County is the fifth county in the state to declare itself a so-called "Second Amendment Sanctuary," though officials decided to use a different term.

"I didn't like that term," Chairman Clint Hickman said, according to the Arizona Republic. "Words mean things," adding that he prefers using the term preservation over sanctuary.

Another difference between the resolution passed in Maricopa County and the ones in other counties is that officials took out language that said the county would not use government funds to infringe on people's Second Amendment rights.

"This is a, basically, resolution that reaffirms our support to the constitution in its entirety," Hickman said.

The board passed the resolution by a 4-1 vote, with Supervisor Steve Gallardo, a Democrat, voting against it and calling it "divisive" and "partisan."
